Who Are You Really Dressing For?

Women dress for women, not men. This concept is a popular belief that many hold and have chosen to perpetuate. Although, is this really true for all women? And, what about men? Does this have any relevance to them?

Of all the women in my life, I can say for a fact that they do not always dress for other women. Absolutely not. Girls do not put themselves through the maintenance of skin tight skirts and short shorts to please the strangers we walk past each day. No. Those outfits are usually meant for the attention of another purpose…if you know what I’m saying.

Plus, what about the boys? They can’t always be left out when it comes to clothing. Men also dress for their own intentions. Whether it be to impress at a job interview or casually carry on with their friends, it seems that dressing per occasion is something we have in common with the opposite sex. Of course, dressing for the occasion in addition to objective.

When leaving the house, we approach the world with our best foot forward. Oftentimes, that first foot is our appearance. And, whether or not it is a person’s best foot…is subjective. At least, our physical appearance is the first thing people see and create an impression of. The truth hurts but appearances do make judgments. Don’t worry though because knowing this, you can use it at your advantage to create the impression you want…and that is power.

Whether on your way to a first date, interview, night out, party, or what have you…your outfit expectations change. Certain events call for certain unwritten rules that are expected to be followed. For example, wearing white to a wedding where the bride is supposed to be the only one in white would not only make a fool of yourself, but would also be viewed as extremely disrespectful. Of course, if that is an impression you are okay with…well then there are always exceptions. But for the most part, your wardrobe choices also show your concern for the respect of the event. And overall, people are pleased with values such as respect and consideration.

When it comes to your downtime where you have the most freedom, it’s good to dress absolutely and completely for yourself. Dress according to your aesthetic value, body shape, insecurities, strengths, comfort level, and basically, however you like. The unique and possible traditional choices you make contribute to the definition of your style and emphasize personality. So this is where you are allowed to play around and rebel!

In general, dressing for yourself should be a common motif in all of your wardrobe choices no matter where you are going and what you are doing. How you choose to present yourself every time you make that first step out the door, makes a difference in your life. Knowing this, enable yourself to create exactly the impact you want and live life to the fullest.
