UPDATE: 11/25 11:00 a.m.: THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE was able to beat the current record holder, THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON sitting at $142.8 million since 2009, with an opening weekend of $158 million. This marks the largest opening box office accumulation for a November release. How does this number compare to last year’s THE HUNGER GAMES? Well, the first installment of the series dominated the March 2012 market with a safe $152.2 million, which at that time was put on the books as the third largest domestic opening (obviously, that ranking has changed thanks to the recent influx of big blockbusters).
Published: 11/23 2:50 p.m.: As I reported yesterday, THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE is on a trajectory to not only win this weekend’s box office, but to also make a new record for a November release. Currently, Summit’s THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON holds the record at $142.5 million, set back in 2009. With numbers coming in from Friday box office sales, CATCHING FIRE has made $70 million, making its total at nearly $100 million … and the weekend has only just begun!
In other box office news, THE DELIVERY MAN, starring Vince Vaughn, debuted to expectantly low numbers, $2.7 million to be exact. This film is predicted to only bring in $8.1 million this weekend, making it yet another flop of the season. But let’s get real for a second … did you expect a movie about a sperm donor discovering he has 500 children to be a blockbuster? Yea, neither did I.
THOR: THE DARK WORLD is continuing to do respectively well considering its circumstances. With a domestic box office total at $145.1 million, THOR 2 is looking to perform secondary to CATCHING FIRE this weekend. Unfortunately, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston aren’t enough to steer crowds away from the continued story of Katniss Everdeen.
