NBC confirmed today that Jay Leno will be stepping down from his role as host of “The Tonight Show”, and Jimmy Fallon (my fave) will take his place. Fallon is currently the host on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” which airs after “The Tonight Show.” This promotion is nothing new to the NBC late night line-up. Drama ensued the last time Leno retired from his post in 2009, creating a rift between him and successor Conan O’Brien. The result of that decision landed Conan with his own late night show on TBS.

“We are purposefully making this change when Jay is No. 1, just as Jay replaced Johnny Carson when he was No. 1,” said NBCUniversal Chief Executive Steve Burke. “Jimmy Fallon is a unique talent and this is his time.”

In a statement Leno congratulated Fallon and said, “I hope you’re as lucky as me and hold on to the job until you’re the old guy. If you need me, I’ll be at the garage.”

Fallon’s debut as host of “The Tonight Show” will take place in Spring 2014 — an exact date has yet to be determined.

I couldn’t be more excited for this latest development for Jimmy Fallon! Moving the show to New York City and revitalizing “The Tonight Show” is the right move for NBC. Fallon’s youthfulness caters to an audience NBC has yet to tap into.
