Cassie Clare Talks CITY OF ASHES Movie Spoilers

Cassandra Clare talked to MTV about the CITY OF ASHES movie, scheduled to start production in 2014, and what we should expect from our beloved characters!

“Simon (Robert Sheehan) is turned into a vampire,” Clare teases, “And he goes from being this human who’s Clary’s friend to this ravenous undead thing.” Clare adds that she pushed for Sheehan in the role, with early discussions about his casting centering on how right he’d look stalking the night and sucking blood. “Robbie was actually my idea,” she says. “I saw him in ‘Misfits,’ which is a big comedy hit in Britain, and he’s just so good and yet also able to be heartbreaking and I thought he’ll be great and he will enjoy the hell out of being a vampire.”

What else can fans expect from “City of Ashes?” Well, Sigourney Weaver is joining the series as the Inquisitor. Describing the previously-announced casting, Clare says the character is “This badass, scary lady” that fans can expect to enjoy. Although she’s sworn to secrecy about any other details for the adaptation, Clare says there’s a massive battle on the deck of a warship capping the second story that she’s excited to see onscreen.

Constantin to Begin Production on CITY OF ASHES

964279 - The Mortal Instruments

This is the news we’ve been waiting for! Constantin, the production company that spearheads THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS films, has finally announced that CITY OF ASHES is green lit! What does this mean? Well, we could be seeing CITY OF ASHES in theaters as early as late 2014.

Martin Moszkowicz, Constantin Film’s head of film and TV, said that it was TMI’s passionate fanbase that helped sway his decision.

“The fan response, from the blogosphere and the thousands of mails we have received, has encouraged us to keep going,” Moszkowicz told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s been overwhelmingly positive, in contrast to some other YA titles.”

“We are analyzing what we did wrong with the first film, particularly with the positioning and marketing, and what changes we have to make. We are working with a great group of people to reposition the franchise (for City of Ashes).”

“The readers of Mortal Instruments are older than you might think,” he said. “That may have been one issue in our marketing, that we focused too much on a very young audience segment.”

Now that the executives finally understand the demographic and fanbase they are dealing with, I can’t wait to see how CITY OF ASHES turns out. Here’s to hoping that it stays truer to the book!

THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF ASHES Write-In Campaign

A couple weeks ago, the TMI fandom was rocked with the terrible news that CITY OF ASHES would be on an indefinite hold. We weren’t told what caused this “hold”, but days later, we were told that it was the screenplay to blame. However, with that being said, there is a way for us to make a difference in how these executives make their decision.

No matter where we are – we all have one common goal. To have City of Ashes made. We’re going old fashioned – take the time to send a postcard or a letter – and tell them why this has to be done. This fandom is not backing down without a fight.

Do you want THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF ASHES film to be made? Well, one way to get some movie executives attention is to send them a letter, describing why YOU want or NEEEEEEED CITY OF ASHES to be made! TMI fan sites have banded together to get the fandom involved in tipping the scale in our favor. We’ve named this the City of Ashes Write-In Campaign. If there isn’t a distributor for you to write to in your area or you cannot send your letter for any reason, please send us an EMAIL ([email protected]) containing your letter! We will gladly send it on your behalf! The more letters we get and can send to these distributors, the better! It is all about the surprise factor; we want to overwhelm Constantin and show them just how much we love TMI.

Your letters don’t need to be long (but they totally can if that’s your thing), they just need to be persuasive! Please have them sent by NO LATER than the end of this month. What are you waiting for .. GET TO WRITING 🙂

THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS sequel CITY OF ASHES production delayed

Production on City of Ashes, the sequel to City of Bones, was due to start next week but now we’ve got word that it’s been delayed, maybe even cancelled all together.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones based on the best selling book by Cassandra Clare had a reported budget of $60 million but only grossed $37 million worldwide. (that is without taking into consideration advertising and other expenses.) Check out the press release below:

LOS ANGELES (September 10, 2013) – Constantin Film announced today that it has postponed the start of principal photography of THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF ASHES.

THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF ASHES is the sequel of Constantin Film’s movie adaptation of THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES, the first book in the bestselling series by Cassandra Clare that has sold over 24 million copies to date.

THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES opened on August 21 and has a $70M worldwide box office take after 3 weeks in release. The book series is currently #1 on the New York Times bestseller list for children series.

THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES is a Constantin Film International GmbH and Unique Features (TMI) Inc.
Productions.

The push of THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF ASHES allows Constantin Film to analyze the results to date and reposition the franchise in order to maximize the results for future installments.

Said Martin Moszkowicz of Constantin Film and an executive producer on the franchise: “Constantin Film has a long tradition of adapting books to the big screen. Pushing back the start of production of CITY OF ASHES was a decision we did not take lightly. But after speaking with all of our partners on the creative and distribution side, it was clear that it will be beneficial to have more time to reposition the film in the current market place.

THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS series has an incredibly loyal and ardent fan base and is a bestselling book series. While taking Cassandra Claire’s vision to the screen we want to make sure to draw on the full potential of the franchise.

Since the first movie didn’t make the money they thought it would – they have no reason to believe that the second one would do any better. As a fan of the series I am completely heartbroken by this news but I will stay positive and hope that they will give the sequel a chance. You never know, right?  Maybe the fans could get together and make the studio see that a sequel would benefit them? Maybe DVD sales will prove the fans are there? Social media and powerful fan bases make me believe in the weirdest miracles when it comes to these types of things.

What are your thoughts? Do you want another film or are you okay with it being cancelled? Let us know in the comments!

Lily Collins #TMIMovie Red Carpet Premiere Looks

Lily Collins is one fashionable starlet! She started off her TMI press tour with a trendy display of crop tops, modern prints, classic silhouettes and high heels at the TMI Mall Tour in Minneapolis, Chicago, Miami, Philadelphia and Los Angeles. I didn’t think it was possible to get anymore chic, but at the TMI Premieres in LA, London, Berlin, Madrid, and Norway, Lily stepped it up a notch and added Old Hollywood glam to her black carpet look.
